Steve's credentials:
Steve has been a certified Hang Gliding instructor since 1999.
Steve also flies airplanes, ultra lights, and paragliders, and has flown over 2000 tandem hang gliding flights.
Where do we fly from?
We fly from Mt. Prevost in Duncan on Vancouver Island, or Mt. Bruce on Saltspring Island.
Both launches are approximately 2300 ft. above sea level.
Location depends upon current wind direction and passenger preference.
How do we launch, fly, and land together?
After careful pre-flight instruction from Steve, the passenger and Steve take 4 to 10 steps together down a short ramp. As the airspeed increases the glider gently lifts you into the air.
The passenger and pilot fly side by side, with the passenger being allowed (but not required) to take control as this is also your first hang gliding lesson!
Most people though, just want to experience a one time ride, to feel the breeze in their face, and find out what's it's like to fly like a bird.
Landing is very similar to an airplane, touching down on wheels in a soft pasture.
Flights are usually about 7 to 10 minutes long, but have lasted much longer in good conditions with a willing passenger.
Is there an age restriction?
Steve has flown passengers from 5 to 75 years old.
What about weight and physical condition?
The maximum passenger weight is about 230 lbs (105 Kilos) but this is largely dependent on the launch winds on the day of the flight.
A glider needs airspeed to fly, the heavier the weight, the more airspeed needed. If the winds are light, more ground speed (running) is required. Steve will assess each passengers ability, with the wind conditions on the day of the flight.
What will a flight cost?
First time tandems are 175 dollars.
After your first tandem, you will be considered a student, and any additional flights will be 120 dollars.
What do I bring?
Shoes you can run a few steps in. If you have a favorite helmet, bring it along. (we have a good supply)
Jeans and sunglasses are also a good idea.
If there is more than one person flying in your group, we could be a few hours (landing, packing the glider back on the truck and back up the mountain) so perhaps a sandwich and drink.
What about further instruction?
Hang Glide Vancouver Island specializes in tandem flights. Depending on how keen a person is to learn, we can help you find an appropriate glider, instructional books, guide you to the training hill and help you along the way to achieving your goal of independent flight.
